Packing for Mars
editorial / interaction
This is a digital redesign of The New York Times best-seller Packing For Mars: The Curious Science of Life in the Void.
Because real talk, how can you fully encapsulate the Infinity and Beyond in inked slices of paper? You can't. Wacky animated cover and trippy galactic buttons (or are they portals?) to transport you to the different chapters of space-living, just do it better. So much better.
Colors are inspired by Mars, spacesuits and Space, while buttons and pagination cues mimic orbits of natural satellites. Typefaces are picked based on the book's theme and tone: awkward, human, technical and nerdy.
This project was done for the course Advanced Typography offered at the University of Washington back in autumn 2014. The prompt was to redesign any book of choice as a digital publication to be viewed on a tablet.
CREDITS & COLOPHON
Annabelle Gould was the course instructor and project supervisor.
Tools used are using Adobe InDesign, Digital Publishing Suite (DPS), Illustrator and AfterEffects. Typefaces used are Snowinter, Multicolore, Mensch and Klinic Slab Book.
